Inhalt:

This course is designed for students who are preparing or working on a final thesis in American literature or culture, be it a "Magisterarbeit," "Zulassungsarbeit," "BA-Arbeit" or Master’s thesis. It offers continuous support during the process of preparing or writing the thesis, and provides an opportunity to share parts of it with other students. The course consists of plenary and individual sessions; the syllabus and readings will be available on the Virtual Campus.

In the plenary sessions, we will discuss general criteria and formal aspects of a thesis – such as possible topics and research questions, theoretical approaches, and structural issues. Participants will present (parts of) their thesis for discussion and feedback. The individual sessions consist of one-to-one tutorials in which you will discuss the argument and structure of your thesis with me. For students who write their thesis in literary or cultural studies in the BA, MA and new teacher training programs, this course provides the "Betreuungsübung."

Inhalt:

No one likes a know-it-all – except perhaps when reading a story. Narrators often seem to know everything and share it with their eager audience – or do they? In this class will study models that describe the various options of how to tell a story, in order to understand how meaning is created and communicated.

We will discuss key texts on narrative typologies by Roland Barthes, Franz Karl Stanzel, Gérard Genetté, Mieke Bal, and Monika Fludernik, to understand the underlying models and principles those scholars observed and developed. We will also explore how narrative communication actually works in a wide variety of literary examples, most of which will be selected from the reading list of the American Studies department (https://www.uni-bamberg.de/amerikanistik/studium/leseliste/) and with reference to the "Staatsexamen" in Literary Studies.

The goal of this class is to develop a firm understanding of various models of narrative communication, while gaining a comprehensive insight into the development of North American literature and its socio-political and historical context.

Inhalt:

This course aims to assist students in writing their FIRST term paper in literary or cultural studies in Bamberg. We will discuss general formal aspects and content related criteria of an academic paper, such as possible topics, structure, suitable theoretical approaches. Primarily, however, we will practice how to choose a topic, how to develop a coherent structure, how to involve theoretical frameworks, and how to adhere to the MLA citation rules. Finally, we will discuss the different types of source material that are suitable for the list of references of your paper. Students have the chance to present a provisional outline in a closed discussion forum, where they will receive feedback from fellow students and the instructor.

This course is also addressed at students who are writing their BA-thesis with Dr. Konopka (American Studies). Therefore, this course provides the guidance sessions for the BA thesis (Betreuungsübung) for students in the BA programs who write their thesis in literary or cultural studies. It assists students in the preparation of their final paper, and gives them an opportunity to discuss their work with other students. BA-candidates will present parts of their final paper, offering it for discussion and feedback. If you are planning to attend this class, make sure that the instructor will also be your thesis advisor. Please contact Dr. Konopka well in advance to discuss your topic and the requirements for the supervision.

Please note that this is a practical training course and not a lecture! Everyone is expected to participate in the tasks and discussions.

Inhalt:

This course provides a concise introduction to major themes and methods in the study of English and American Literature. We will discuss key features of the main literary genres poetry, prose fiction and drama, explore selected approaches in literary theory and criticism as a basis for analyzing and interpreting literary texts, and survey the main periods and developments of predominantly English literary history.

Please note that all Introductions to English and American Literary Studies prepare students for the analysis and interpretation of both English and American literature. The only difference is that the Introductions taught by members of the English Literature section use literary examples from a primarily British context, and those taught by members of the American Studies section use primarily American examples. Choosing one or the other Introduction does not mean that you specialize in English or American literature, and you don t have to take your later courses in the same area.

The following applies only to students whose Basismodul Literaturwissenschaft contains both the Introduction to Literary Studies and a lecture:
As of now, the final written exam of this Introduction to Literary Studies is also the module exam for the Basismodul Literaturwissenschaft. Inhalt:: In one of his seminal essays, “Exile and Creativity,” the Czech born Brazilian philosopher Vilem Flusser view the condition of exile as a challenge to creativity. In his hypothesis, Flusser has argued that “… exile is unliveable. One must transform the information whizzing around into meaningful messages, to make it liveable. One must ‘process’ the data. It is a question of survival: if one fails to transform the data, one is engulfed by the waves of exile. Data transformation is a synonym for creation.” Therefore, according to Flusser, to live up to the life of an exile, one has to be creative; and arguably, a dialogue between the experience of being exiled and finding one’s voice becomes possible. This finding a voice resulted in constructing a new (im-)migrant identity, which in retrospect problematises the foundational understanding of ‘Exile Writers.’ In a foundational sense, an exile writer holds a privileged status as in-betweens, as a mediator between two cultures, thus become an agent of interpretation, who constructs a binary between an alienating “here” and a romanticised “homeland.” However, many of the current writers with an exile background rejected this notion and accepted the status of an (im-)migrant. Writers like Salman Rushdie or Caryl Phillips, for example, have adopted the term “(im-)migrant” to describe their literary production and their personal experience of transculturation. This shift from an exile to (im-)migration does not emphasise a specific point of departure and a point of arrival; instead, it prioritises movement, rootlessness, and mixing cultures, races, and language. It creates a world that does not create a binary inhibition of “here” and “there.” Instead, it celebrates the displacement and its apparent effect on the (im-)migrant’s identity, which alter the self-perception and often result in ambivalence both to the old and new ‘self.’ This new (im-)migrant identity no longer ordinarily or even nostalgically remember the past as a fixed and comforting anchor to life, since its contours move with the present rather than in opposition to it. Therefore, an (im-)migrant’s identity is no longer to do with being but with becoming.

To understand all these matters of being in exile and its relation to creativity and creating a new (im-)migrant identity, non-other than Aleksandar Hemon is the most acutely fitting contemporary writer to read. Aleksandar Hemon is a Bosnian-American writer who teaches creative writing at the University of Princeton currently. Lewis Centre for the Arts at the University of Princeton writes about him: “Born in Sarajevo, Hemon graduated from the University of Sarajevo with a degree in literature and visited Chicago in 1992 as a part of a journalism exchange program, intending to stay for just a few months. However, he could not return home because of the Bosnian War and graduated from Northwestern University with his master’s degree, simultaneously working a series of jobs while continuing to learn English. He wrote his first story in English in 1995.” Since then, Aleksandar Hemon has written seven books: two non-fiction, two short story collections, and three novels. He also has written a few screenplays, and the most recent one is the fourth Matrix movie in cooperation with the British writer David Mitchel. He also edited Best European Fiction between 2010 and 2013.

This seminar will read, analyse, and discuss Aleksandar Hemon’s writing in light of Vilem Flusser’s hypothesis on being an exile and creative and a new (im-)migrant identity. In particular, it will investigate the link between exile and creativity, immigrant experiences and literature, immigrant narrative and nostalgia. The discussion will focus on trans-cultural identities, reception and criticism of migrant identity, the complex experience of immigrant characters living in between two or more languages, societies and cultures.

Inhalt:: Romanticism is perhaps one of the most recognisable intellectual, artistic and literary movements in late 18th-century Europe. In the case of Britain, the movement certainly left a mark on the literature of the time. From England to Scotland and Wales, romanticism could be seen in poetry, novels and plays. The aims of this course is to provide an overview of the movement by characterising and contextualising it as well as by analysing key romantic texts. In order to do so, the course will first put Romanticism into context, that is to say, we shall study Romanticism in relation to its social and historical context, as well as analyse it taking into account the dialogue it establishes with other movements of the time, for instance the Gothic, Realism and the Age of Enlightenment. We shall have a panoramic view into the “origins” and development of Romanticism, from both an artistic and literary stand point as well as a philosophical one. The second and larger part of this course will provide an in-depth analysis of Romantic poetry, for instance with poems by Wordsworth, Burns and Shelley, and later novels by Scott, Austen and other authors.

Inhalt:: What does the word pain resonate with? Is the word pain only relevant for medical science and treatment? How do people make sense of pain? How are bodily and psychological forms of pain intertwined? How do people express pain in words? Are pain and suffering inexplicable? What languages do we use in describing pain, how do we read or even inherit the pain and suffering of others? How does contemporary literature and culture represent the pain and suffering of others?

This seminar will draw attention to the study of pain and suffering from a multidisciplinary approach in dialogue with literature, culture, and media. We will begin the semester with an overview of the concept of pain from medical science and psychoanalytic studies perspectives to the most recent focus on representation and literary theoretical works on pain. Subsequently, we will discuss more recent developments in the study of pain, looking at the ways in which they are relevant for today’s worldview.

Each session will start with a short student presentation followed by discussions of significant texts. For the success of this class, it is paramount that all of the assigned texts be read and prepared carefully.

Inhalt:: Lyrical texts such as poems and songs are particularly suitable for illustrating the characteristics of literariness to students: different levels of communication, stylistic devices and aesthetic effects are distinct in this genre with its tendency towards condensation and structural rigour. At the same time, poems and songs can offer readers and listeners an engaging insight into a great variety of social, cultural, and environmental issues. For English language education, lyrical texts have several benefits and, primarily due to their brevity and density of subject matter, they provide opportunities for flexible use and the development of various competences as well as critical literacy. In this interdisciplinary seminar, we will explore lyrical texts ranging from traditional poems to popular songs from different academic perspectives. These include literary-cultural, linguistic, and educational as well as methodological perspectives to identify how verse can be analysed and integrated into English language education. In opening up the canon of lyrical texts and including popular and learner-centred texts such as rhymes, tongue twisters, and pop songs, English language education can encourage learners to discover specific features of lyrical texts, identify layers of meaning, and explore various transcultural perspectives as well as issues of social (in)justice relevant in our society today.

Inhalt:: “[A]s unknown […] as the darkest reaches of Africa.” As a description of the backstreets of London, this quotation, from Arthur Machen’s 1895 horror novel The Three Imposters, is typical of tropes of ‘otherness’ routinely employed in late nineteenth-century British culture. As the Empire reached its high-water mark, and British society exulted in its own self-confidence, an anxiety at ‘the alien’ was growing in the shadows and at the margins. Even (or perhaps precisely) at the end of a century that had seen the unprecedented advance of science and technology, both the fear and the fascination around ghosts, monsters, and devils of all kinds was permeating literary and cultural production. A sense that secure borders were crumbling found a virulent focal point in a growing fear of the impact of mass immigration, especially from Eastern Europe.

The primary focus of this seminar will be British and Irish literature and culture of the fin de siècle. In particular, we shall consider how literary texts both figured and reflected insecurities and anxieties about human and social identity in relation to its many ‘others’. Beginning with a contextual introduction, which will present the scientific, philosophical, and medical backdrop to our texts, we shall develop our theoretical framework around Sigmund Freud’s essay ‘Das Unheimliche’ (1919). This will be followed by a selection of Gothic short stories, and novellas and novels that articulate alterity in its myriad forms. We will begin with Robert Louis Stevenson’s chilling ‘tales of terror’ ‘The Body Snatcher’ (1884), The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886), and ‘Olalla’ (1896). Moving through Henry James’s brilliantly subtle and uncanny ghost stories, we will conclude the course with two of the fin de siècle’s greatest novels of aliens and monstrous Others: Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897) and H. G. Wells’ The Time Machine (1895).

Well, women are used to worrying over trifles, (9) notes the condescending husband of a female sleuth in Susan Glaspell s 1916 play Trifles. In this seminar, our interest lies precisely in these alleged trifles, as we meet silly, shocking, and shooting women, [a] Gay Republican (Angels 29), or [a] bunch of revolutionary manumission abolitionists (Hamilton, My Shot ) on America s theater stages, and set out to examine representations of America on Stage that transcend the stereotype of the white heterosexual male protagonist.

Analyzing both US-American theater plays across the twentieth century and contemporary Broadway musicals, we will address questions of diversity in terms of race, class, gender, sexual orientation, illness, (dis)ability, human-animal relationships, and others, rethinking definitions of American national identity. Our readings include Susan Glaspell s Trifles (1916), Lillian Hellman s The Children s Hour (1934), Lorraine Hansberry s A Raisin in the Sun (1959), and Tony Kushner s Angels in America Part One: Millennium Approaches (1991), as well as excerpts from other renowned plays, and their movie adaptations. We will also analyze American musical theater from Rent (1994) to Hamilton (2016) from a perspective of diversity.

In our seminar, we will read these plays within relevant historical contexts of feminism, racial (in)equality, and LGBTQIA+ history, with a special interest in the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the 1980s and 90s. We will engage critically with these plays using insights from Gender Studies, Queer Studies, Critical Whiteness Studies, and Performance Studies, amongst others, in order to analyze the multifaceted US-American theatrical landscape from an intersectional, interdisciplinary, and multimedia standpoint.

This seminar is an internet-based survey course that offers students in the “Aufbaumodul Literaturwissenschaft” an overview of the main developments in US-American literary history. The class will help students to understand the links between literary periods, their central ideas, and important stylistic features. The course provides participants with detailed information about the complexities that underlie and connect each literary work and period. The course’s other main goal is to familiarize students with key texts and key discourses of US-American literature, such as race, class, and gender. The texts were chosen because they either represent crucial aspects of their respective literary periods, or because they address topics and concepts that were controversial at this particular point in history.

Despite being an E-Learning course, this is a discussion-based class, so active participation is crucial. Participants are required to contribute to class discussions by posting at least two quality responses per forum. Inhalt:: Modernist poetry is characterised by a number of features including technical innovation, for example the increased use of free verse, a revolution in the use of language, and a distinctive moving away from the nineteenth century idea of an “unproblematic” voice and audience. This seminar will look specifically at the "British" modernists, including the poetry of James Joyce, T.S. Eliot (special emphasis), W.B. Yeats and the later modernists Louis MacNeice and Dylan Thomas. Close readings of the texts will be seen against the historical and cultural context of the times. A PDF file of the poems to be discussed will be provided at the beginning of the seminar.

Inhalt:: This literary studies seminar, which is particularly, though not exclusively, directed at students in teachers training programmes, pursues two interrelated goals. First of all, it sets out to understand the short story as a literary genre in its own right by drawing on theoretical explanations. Secondly, it wants to review tendencies within postcolonial literature, a segment of English writing in which the short story has been disproportionately represented. The following are the guiding questions of the seminar: What is the experience of reading a (postcolonial) short story? Why has the short story been such a popular choice for the disempowered? Is this genre particularly suited for the representation of marginalized identities? What are the major themes of postcolonial short stories? What categories of postcolonial stories can we distinguish? What analytical tools are provided by postcolonial theory for understanding this kind of literature? Authors discussed in the seminar include James Matthews, Nadine Gordimer, Ben Okri, Salman Rushdie, and Chinua Achebe.

Most stories for the seminar will be provided on the Virtual Campus at the beginning of the semester.

Inhalt:: Why do readers empathise with fictional characters? To what effect do narratives break with real-world frames and feature dead or unborn narrators? How can a story be told by a dog? How can poems, movies, paintings, videogames or cartoons be accommodated into narratological models? And how is storytelling enmeshed with ideology? Do the gender, sexual and ethnic identities of a narrator make a difference? – These are only some of the questions that have been dealt with by postclassical narratologists over the past three decades.

Since its structuralist beginnings in the mid-1960s and a first ‘classical phase’ (– early 1980s), the field of narratology has seen methodological and thematic extensions as well as (more radical) revisions, contestations and diversifications, to the point when Ansgar Nünning – as early as 2003 – questioned the usefulness of keeping ‘narratology’ as an overarching term for the ever-proliferating number of ‘postclassical narratologies’. Ever since its first coinage in David Herman’s seminal study Narratologies: New Perspectives on Narrative Analysis (1999), the label ‘postclassical narratology’ has come to denominate a set of interdisciplinary, pragmatic, context- and reader-oriented narratologies which, in opposition to classical models striving to develop ‘universal’ categories, “consider the circumstances that make every act of reading different” (Herman/Vervaeck 2005).

After a revision of the classical narratologies of especially Tvetan Todorov, Franz Stanzel and Gérard Genette and Seymour Chatman, we will dedicate each session to the theory as well as methodology and application of a distinctive postclassical narratological approach. Students will be asked to read theoretical texts in preparation for each meeting as well as (excerpts from) fictional and non-fictional texts.

Among the postclassical narratologies we will cover are: transgeneric and transmedial narratology, rhetorical narratology, cognitive, natural and unnatural narratology, feminist, queer and postcolonial narratology, ideology and narrative, narratology beyond the human.

Inhalt:: This seminar plunges us into revolutionary romantic era through the work of its leading activist, “Citizen John” Thelwall, radical orator and writer, voice of the people, pioneer of free speech and a linchpin figure who unites literature and politics, “the worlds of Wordsworth and Coleridge, and the Spitalfields weavers” (E.P. Thompson).

We will enter this diverse and dynamic era through Thelwall’s 1801 novel The Daughter of Adoption. This witty, multitextured and accessible adventure captures ideas of its own time that remain compelling, even urgent, in ours, including human rights, feminism, capitalist imperialism, abolitionism and the Black Atlantic, education, colonial medicine, and the techniques and traditions of the “romance” novel (bildungsroman, gothic, sentimental, jacobin) that Thelwall adopts and adapts for political purposes. Students will explore these and other themes and contexts through individual presentations, to which the whole class (including the professor) will respond in animated online synchronous discussion.

The final paper growing out of your presentation offers an opportunity to do truly pioneering work in a relatively new and rapidly growing field. You will be expected to read what specific criticism there is on the novel, and Thelwall’s polymathic work, but also to insert Thelwall into the history of romantic studies from which he has been missing until recently, and to bring your own diverse perspectives and experiences to bear on the novel. Although your professor, Judith Thompson, is the world’s leading expert on Thelwall, and one of the editors of The Daughter of Adoption, she is still surprised and delighted by her students’ original insights; just last month, an MA student drew attention to something she had completely missed in multiple readings of the novel, and like Thelwall, she looks forward to hearing everyone’s voice.

Inhalt:: The interwar period denotes the time between the end of the Great War (1914-1918) and the beginning of the Second World War (1939-1945). During this time, (not only) Europe struggled with the effects of the war on civil society, international diplomacy, and national and individual fates. With national traumas and the loss of the “lost Generation”, a term coined by Gertrude Stein, on the one hand and the fundamental social changes in British class structures and gender roles on the other hand, the interwar period was one of the most suspenseful and varied times in modern history. From the “Roaring Twenties” and their celebration of the loss of old boundaries to the Great Depression and the rise of Fascism on the Continent in the thirties, the period provides a constant up and down and threw the people from one World War into the next.

From the perspective of literary studies, the interwar period proved to be highly fruitful. Besides the continuation of literary modernism, which had started around the beginning of the century and would deeply affect all forms of literature – narrative, poetry, and drama –, the interwar period boasts of an enormous diversification of genres and literary styles. This course aims at showcasing this literary diversity in all three Aristotelian genres (narrative, poetry, and drama) by exemplarily examining texts from such different perspectives as T.S. Eliot’s and Edith Sitwell’s modern poetry, Noel Coward’s comedies, Virginia Woolf’s and Katherine Mansfield’s short fiction, Agatha Christie’s Golden Age crime novels, Aldous Huxley’s dystopian fiction, or J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy. The focus of this course will be on narrative texts.

This course will begin by giving an overview of the interwar years before it moves into non-fiction and theoretical texts, poetry, drama and narrative (with a focus on the latter). Over the course of the semester, we will read and discuss the obligatory reading (see below) alongside theoretical texts, which will be made available on the VC. As this course will be discussion-intensive, participants are kindly asked to be visible on MS Teams even when not speaking to create a familiar and inviting atmosphere, which allows for higher-quality discussions.

Inhalt:: “My name is Karim Amir, and I am an Englishman born and bred, almost. I am often considered to be a funny kind of Englishman, a new breed as it were, having emerged from two old histories.” Thus begins Hanif Kureishi’s picaresque novel of identities lost and identities re-forged, The Buddha of Suburbia: a state-of-the-nation snapshot of 1970s Britain, certainly, but also a wry portrait of the myriad challenges of location and adaptation faced by first- and second-generation migrants in a ‘mother country’ that was by turns indifferent and hostile. In 2021, a tolerant and multicultural Britain may be a mixture of fantasy and reality – but even the ‘reality’, as we have recently seen, has surprisingly shallow historical roots.

One the basis of the theoretical framework supplied by Edward Said, Stuart Hall, and Homi K. Bhabha, we will be reading some of the finest literary work to have emerged from the problematic legacy of Empire. We start with Sam Selvon’s classic novel, The Lonely Londoners (1956), an exploration of the struggles of belonging and discrimination faced by the first generation of immigrants from the West Indies. Andrea Levy’s epic bestseller, Small Island (2004) intertwines multiple stories and perspectives in a tale of love, loss, new homes, and new identities. The Buddha of Suburbia traces out Karim’s attempts, as the mixed-race son of an Indian immigrant, to find his own path. Finally, Zadie Smith’s White Teeth (2000) crosses cultures, generations, and much else besides in a multi-stranded account of Britain’s complex attitude towards its Commonwealth.

Inhalt:

The Harlem Renaissance marks one of the most significant moments in the history of American literature: Between the end of World War I and the Great Depression of the 1930s, writers in this movement connected with the African American cultural tradition and participated in creating American modernism. The Harlem Renaissance was a social, political, and aesthetic movement as well as an artistic revolution, and is inseparable from the social context of Harlem in the 1920s which included high-brow literary saloons, rent parties, Jazz clubs, ball rooms, theaters, journals, and book stores.

In this seminar, we will talk about the literature of this movement in the context of its music and art, and with special emphasis on the women who shaped it. We will read Georgia Douglas Johnson s play Plumes (1927), Nella Larsen s Quicksand (1928), Zora Neale Hurston s Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937) and some of her short stories, as well as poetry by Angelina Weld Grimké, Anne Spencer, and Gwendolyn Bennet, in relation to texts, songs, and art by other players of this movement (including W.E.B. Dubois, Langston Hughes, Bessy Smith, Josephine Baker, Paul Robeson, Alaine Locke, Countee Cullen, Jean Toomer). More information and readings will be available on the Virtual Campus soon.

This class will be taught in a blended format, combining asynchronous assignments with in-class-room meetings (on Zoom or, COVID permitting, in the lecture hall). The first meet-ing will take place on Zoom.

Inhalt:

What exactly is a hometown? Why is small town life either desired or despised? Why do people call places “home” which are not their places of birth or even places where their families live? How – if at all – have definitions of “home” changed over time? What is the relevance of “home” for American politics? What role does real estate play? How strong is nostalgia in the projection of “home”?

The seminar will attempt to answer these and related questions by looking closely at a broad variety of North American texts (novels, short stories, paintings, photographs, film).

Inhalt:: Lyrical texts such as poems and songs are particularly suitable for illustrating the characteristics of literariness to students: different levels of communication, stylistic devices and aesthetic effects are distinct in this genre with its tendency towards condensation and structural rigour. At the same time, poems and songs can offer readers and listeners an engaging insight into a great variety of social, cultural, and environmental issues. For English language education, lyrical texts have several benefits and, primarily due to their brevity and density of subject matter, they provide opportunities for flexible use and the development of various competences as well as critical literacy. In this interdisciplinary seminar, we will explore lyrical texts ranging from traditional poems to popular songs from different academic perspectives. These include literary-cultural, linguistic, and educational as well as methodological perspectives to identify how verse can be analysed and integrated into English language education. In opening up the canon of lyrical texts and including popular and learner-centred texts such as rhymes, tongue twisters, and pop songs, English language education can encourage learners to discover specific features of lyrical texts, identify layers of meaning, and explore various transcultural perspectives as well as issues of social (in)justice relevant in our society today.

Inhalt:: Hamlet, Dracula, Lawrence of Arabia and Life of Brian. What do these movies have in common? They're all quite old and they all continue to enjoy substantial popularity. They will stand the test of time and will therefore be considered as film classics. In this seminar you will be introduced to British film classics which were produced between 1944 and 1985. Upon completion of this course, you will have developed a broader knowledge of these movies. You will also develop greater skills in the use of video for the purposes of teaching and presentation.

Die Übung/das Kolloquium wendet sich vornehmlich an Studierende der Britischen Kultur in höheren Semestern. Es versteht sich als offenes wissenschaftliches Forum, in dem B.A.- und M.A.-Arbeiten, Magisterarbeiten, Dissertationen oder andere kulturwissenschaftlich relevante Projekte auch unter Beteiligung von Gästen zur Diskussion stehen. Zugleich bietet dieses Forum auch die Möglichkeit, eher formal orientierte Fragestellungen der Praxis zu diskutieren (z. B. Präsentationsformen bei Vorträgen/Referaten, Redaktion von Texten).

Zudem werden berufsorientierte Veranstaltungen durchgeführt, die den Studierenden Einblick in verschiedene Berufsmöglichkeiten geben sollen.

Inhalte für Vertiefungsmodul: ein Spezialgebiet. In diesem Modul werden die Kenntnisse einer weiteren Epoche bzw. einer weiteren kulturwissenschaftlichen Fragestellung vermittelt, die mit eigener regelmäßiger Lektüre begleitet wird. Zudem werden berufsrelevante Schlüsselqualifikationen (z.B. Präsentations- und Kommunikationstechniken) ausdifferenziert und vertieft. Mündliche und schriftliche Präsentation eigener Ergebnisse wird eingeübt.

The colloquium is intended primarily for advanced students of British culture. It is to be understood as an open academic forum in which B.A. and M.A. essays, Magister and other dissertations, or other projects in the realm of cultural studies, can be discussed in the presence of participating guests. At the same time, this forum offers the opportunity to discuss more formal questions of academic practice (e.g. presentational methods for lectures and presentations, composition of texts).

In addition, sessions will be organized with a more vocational orientation, intended to give the students insight into various professional possibilities.

Contents ("Vertiefungsmodul"): An area of expert knowledge. This module allows students to acquire knowledge of an additional period and of an additional cultural studies problem, all accompanied by appropriate regular reading. Furthermore, certain key professional skills (e.g. presentational and communicational techniques) will be refined and deepened. There will be practice in the spoken and written presentation of the students’ research results.

Inhalt:: [A]s unknown [ ] as the darkest reaches of Africa. As a description of the backstreets of London, this quotation, from Arthur Machen s 1895 horror novel The Three Imposters, is typical of tropes of otherness routinely employed in late nineteenth-century British culture. As the Empire reached its high-water mark, and British society exulted in its own self-confidence, an anxiety at the alien was growing in the shadows and at the margins. Even (or perhaps precisely) at the end of a century that had seen the unprecedented advance of science and technology, both the fear and the fascination around ghosts, monsters, and devils of all kinds was permeating literary and cultural production. A sense that secure borders were crumbling found a virulent focal point in a growing fear of the impact of mass immigration, especially from Eastern Europe.

The primary focus of this seminar will be British and Irish literature and culture of the fin de siècle. In particular, we shall consider how literary texts both figured and reflected insecurities and anxieties about human and social identity in relation to its many others . Beginning with a contextual introduction, which will present the scientific, philosophical, and medical backdrop to our texts, we shall develop our theoretical framework around Sigmund Freud s essay Das Unheimliche (1919). This will be followed by a selection of Gothic short stories, and novellas and novels that articulate alterity in its myriad forms. We will begin with Robert Louis Stevenson s chilling tales of terror The Body Snatcher (1884), The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886), and Olalla (1896). Moving through Henry James s brilliantly subtle and uncanny ghost stories, we will conclude the course with two of the fin de siècle s greatest novels of alien invasion: Bram Stoker s Dracula (1897) and H. G. Wells The War of the Worlds (1898).

Inhalt:: “My name is Karim Amir, and I am an Englishman born and bred, almost. I am often considered to be a funny kind of Englishman, a new breed as it were, having emerged from two old histories.” Thus begins Hanif Kureishi’s picaresque novel of identities lost and identities re-forged, The Buddha of Suburbia: a state-of-the-nation snapshot of 1970s Britain, certainly, but also a wry portrait of the myriad challenges of location and adaptation faced by first- and second-generation migrants in a ‘mother country’ that was by turns indifferent and hostile. In 2021, a tolerant and multicultural Britain may be a mixture of fantasy and reality – but even the ‘reality’, as we have recently seen, has surprisingly shallow historical roots.

One the basis of the theoretical framework supplied by Edward Said, Stuart Hall, and Homi K. Bhabha, we will be reading some of the finest literary work to have emerged from the problematic legacy of Empire. We start with Sam Selvon’s classic novel, The Lonely Londoners (1956), an exploration of the struggles of belonging and discrimination faced by the first generation of immigrants from the West Indies. Andrea Levy’s epic bestseller, Small Island (2004) intertwines multiple stories and perspectives in a tale of love, loss, new homes, and new identities. The Buddha of Suburbia traces out Karim’s attempts, as the mixed-race son of an Indian immigrant, to find his own path. Finally, Zadie Smith’s White Teeth (2000) crosses cultures, generations, and much else besides in a multi-stranded account of Britain’s complex attitude towards its Commonwealth.

This course provides an overview of important approaches in the theory of culture. We will study key texts that have influenced the discipline of Cultural Studies in the Anglo-American world and beyond. Inhalt:

In this seminar, we are going to have a look at various disasters that have shaped the history of the United States. We will analyze environmental disasters (e.g. the San Francisco Earthquake, Hurricane Katrina, the Great Chicago Fire, the Dust Bowl, the Exxon Valdez,..), man-made disasters (e.g. 9/11, the Challenger Disaster,..), and other catastrophes such as the sinking of the Titanic. Furthermore, we will discuss the consequences of these disasters, political and psychological, including the importance of monuments and memory studies.

Inhalt:: In this seminar, we will be looking into the characteristics of British newspaper texts published by, among others, The Guardian, Independent, Daily Telegraph, and The Times. In so doing, we are going to consider the application of quality-press journalistic tools such formal language, in-depth analysis of news events, as well as (relatively) objective and (rather) fact-based news coverage. We will also look into the process of the tabloidisation of quality newspapers. All of this will be done against the background of the news coverage of four major historic events: the General Strike (1926), the Good Friday Agreement (1998), Britain s involvement in the Iraq War (2003), and the Brexit referendum (2016, with references to nationalism/Project Fear). The concepts of mass-produced culture (Adorno and Horkheimer, 1947) as well as folk devils (Cohen, 1972) will be utilised as theoretical starting points. In order to obtain access to the seminar texts, participants will have to create a VPN connection on their computers.

The seminar is an introduction to the essential methodological problems, principles, theoretical models, and historical contexts indispensable for the academic pursuit of British and American cultural studies. The course is conducted in both English and German, in order to familiarize the students with the specialized academic use of both languages.

Grundthemen und Fragestellungen der Kulturwissenschaften konsequent mit literarischen Texten und Lektüren zu verbinden, ihre inhaltlichen Zusammenhänge zu erkennen, systematisch zu rekonstruieren sowie diese kritisch in Wort und Schrift zu analysieren. Es wird ein erster Überblick in kulturwissenschaftliche Analysemodelle und Fachterminologie gewonnen. Ferner werden grundlegende Kompetenzen sowohl formaler als auch zielsprachlicher Art vermittelt. Die kommunikativen und sozialen Kompetenzen der Studierenden werden durch interaktive und projektbezogene Gruppenarbeit gefordert und gefördert.

To relate in a logical fashion the central themes and problems of cultural studies with literary texts, and also to recognize, reconstruct, express and analyse in spoken and written form their mutual relevance. In the first instance the analytical models and special terminology of cultural studies will be established. Thereafter basic skills of both a formal and linguistic nature will be developed. Students' ability to communicate and interact in an academic setting will be both required and promoted by interactive group projects.

März 2022 im KR12/02.05 (09.30-11:00 Uhr) findet eine Wiederholungsklausur für diejenigen Studierenden der Einführungskurse von Dr. Craig (Courses 1 & 3) statt, die den Kurs trotz Mitschreibens der Abschlussklausur nicht bestanden haben oder aufgrund eines ärztlichen Attestes an der Abschlussklausur nicht teilnehmen konnten. Das Attest muss der/m Lehrenden innerhalb von drei Tagen (hier gelten die Bestimmungen unter: https://www.uni-bamberg.de/anglistik/studium/informationen-zur-attestpflicht/ ) im Original vorgelegt werden. Die Wiederholungsklausur wird von den jeweiligen Lehrenden gestellt und muss persönlich abgeholt werden. Eine Auskunft über die Endnote kann nicht per E-Mail oder telefonisch erfolgen. Studierende müssen sich für die Wiederholungsklausur über FlexNow anmelden.
