- Inhalt:
- Die Lebenserwartung in Deutschland steigt immer weiter und die durchschnittliche Gesundheit verbessert sich ebenfalls. Neben diesen erfreulichen Trends besteht das Problem, dass die Gesundheit und ihre Verbesserung sozial sehr ungleich verteilt sind. In diesem Seminar wollen wir der Frage nachgehen, wie gesundheitliche Ungleichheit erklärt werden kann. Wir erörtern, wie Faktoren, die soziologisch betrachtet Teil der Sozialstruktur sind (also Dimensionen sozialer Ungleichheit wie Bildung, Beruf, Einkommen), im Laufe des Lebens die Gesundheit so beeinflussen, dass bestimmte sozial benachteiligte Gruppen kränker sind und früher sterben. Dabei spielen natürlich diese Faktoren selbst, aber auch damit verbundene individuelle Verhaltensweisen, kulturelle und psychosoziale Faktoren sowie auch die medizinische Versorgung eine Rolle.
Durch die Lektüre und Diskussion von Forschungsergebnissen aus verschiedenen Disziplinen in deutscher und englischer Sprache werden wir klären, wie groß das Ausmaß gesundheitlicher Ungleichheit in Deutschland und anderen Ländern ist und wie man sie empirisch erforschen kann. Wir werden uns offenen normativen Fragen stellen, z.B. in welchem Maße gesundheitliche Unterschiede ungerecht sind und wieviel Verantwortung für die Gesundheit jedem selbst und öffentlichen Institutionen zufällt. Schließlich gibt es auch einen kurzen Einblick in sozialwissenschaftliche Konzepte wie Prävention und Gesundheitsförderung, mit denen in der Praxis der Gesundheitsberufe versucht wird, gesundheitliche Ungleichheit zu verringern.
Life expectancy in Germany continues to rise and average health is improving. Next to these positive trends, there is the problem that health and its improvement are very unequally distributed between social groups. In this seminar, we want to investigate how health inequalities can be explained. We discuss how factors that, from a sociological point of view, part of the social structure (i.e. dimensions of social inequality such as education, occupation, income) influence health in the course of life in such a way that certain socially disadvantaged groups are sicker and die earlier. Of course, these factors themselves play a role, so do associated individual behaviors, cultural and psychosocial factors, as well as medical care. By reading and discussing research results from various disciplines in German and English, we will explore the extent of health inequalities in Germany and other countries and how it can be examined empirically. We will ask ourselves open normative questions, e.g. to what extent health differences are unfair and how the responsibility for health should be shared by the individual and public institutions. Finally, there is also a brief glimpse into social science concepts such as prevention and health promotion, which are used in the practice of the health professions in order to reduce health inequalities

- Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
- Participants of the research seminar should be familiar with quantitative data analysis. They should also have completed the course "Research Design".
Note: We will meet for a short introduction session on Tuesday, 19th October 2021, 6:15 pm. This introduction will be held online.
The first regular on-site session will be on 28th October 2021.
- Inhalt:
- In the research seminar, students undergo the entire process of quantitative empirical social research from the identification of a research question over the formulation of theoretically deducted hypotheses to empirical analyses. Over a period of two consecutive semesters, students will conduct their own research projects in the field of sociological research on education and the labour market. The empirical analyses will be based on a selected starting cohort of the German National Educational Panel Study (NEPS). The first part of the seminar (Winter term 2021/22) will be devoted to identifying a relevant research question against the background of the current state of research, deriving theory-guided hypotheses and developing a suitable research design. The second part of the seminar (Summer term 2022) will be devoted to working with the data and transferring the findings of the projects into a scientific research article.
