Inhalt:

The spectacle of Brexit, the eccentricity of Boris Johnson, heated debates in the House of Commons: these are just a few examples of how British politics seems to be marked by a performative quality largely absent from the more sober and solemn workings of the German political system.

In this seminar, we are going to examine British performances of politics in both fiction and real life . We are going to look at specific examples of staging politics, and we will try to understand the reasons behind a theatrical bent that seems to put style over substance.

Preliminary content includes:

• Performative approaches to culture and politics.
• The British political system.
• The parliamentary tradition, the constitutional monarchy, and the unwritten constitution
• The Shakespearian political imaginary and the concept of the “good ruler”.
• Arthurian romance and its renaissance in the 19th century.
• The links between empiricism, “playful detachment” and “national character”.
• The tension between exceptionalism and declinism.
• The Royal Family as spectacle of the state.
• The rhetoric of Winston Churchill.
• The “Cambridge Five”: spy fiction and the performance of left-wing politics.
• Margaret Thatcher: style, vision, and the performance of neoliberal politics.
• New Labour, Cool Britannia – spin and delivery? Performing class and community in Tony Blair’s 1990s.
• Brexit and recent controversies.

Within these topics we will not only consider actual politics but also trace performances of politics in engaging works of literature and popular filmic representations of British politics such as The Crown (Netflix, 2016- ), House of Cards (British original, BBC, 1990), The Thick of It (BBC, 2005-2012), Yes Minister/Yes, Prime Minister (BBC, 1980-1984/1986-1988), Spitting Image (ITV, 1984-1996) and Brexit: The Uncivil War (Toby Haynes, 2019).

Inhalt:

Die als „Schlegel/Tieck“ bekannt gewordene Übersetzung sämtlicher Dramen William Shake¬speares – sie wurde 1797 von August Wilhelm Schlegel begonnen und in den 1820er Jahren von Ludwig Tieck, seiner Tochter Dorothea und Wolf Heinrich von Baudissin fortgeführt – ist zu einem klassischen Text der deutschen Literatur geworden. Die Tagung und das anschließende Kompaktseminar möchte eine Neubewertung dieser Übertragungen vornehmen, indem sie nach ihren Kontexten fragt: nach den Bedingungen, der Theorie und der Praxis des Übersetzens, nach der Bedeutung innerhalb des frühromantischen Programms sowie nach dem Konzept einer „romantisch-poetischen“ Übersetzung. Außerdem werden die Unterschiede in den Verfahren August Wilhelm Schlegels bzw. des Tieck-Kreises, schließlich die intensive Rezeption bis in die Gegenwart vorgestellt und diskutiert; auch soll es um die Frage gehen, wie der „Schlegel/Tieck“ heute am sinnvollsten historisch-kritisch ediert werden kann, welche Anforderungen dabei zu beachten sind und welche digitalen Verfahren bei einer solchen dringend notwendigen Edition zum Einsatz kommen müssen. Konferenzsprache ist Deutsch.

Inhalt:

The story of Shakespeare’s advancement to the ranks of a classic and a national poet in 18th and 19th-century Germany has often been told, though mostly in the context of a continuous fight for the ‘true’ Shakespeare against the various distortions of the original by translators and adaptors.

It is rather rare in discussions of the genesis of the literary appropriation of Shakespeare in Germany that other, more immediately concerned agents (the producers, artists, translators, distributors) as well as political, social and economic factors are taken into account. Unfortunately, all too little is known about many of the publishers and printers involved in the process of literary mediators: how long did they exist, where were their centres of activity and what were their priorities? It is only in the case of some particularly large and influential publishing houses that, on the basis of sales catalogues, of the correspondence with authors, translators and book illustrators, of reviews and other documents, we are in a position to form a clearer idea of Shakespeare on the German book-market. In our seminar I would like to discuss this with reference to the particular case of the influential as well controversial figure of Carl Joseph Meyer, Georg Reimer, Gebr. Schumann and Friedrich Gotthelf Baumgärtner and his son Julius Alexander Baumgärtner.

This course highlights iconic mothers in American socio-cultural and literary history. From Hannah Penn to Dr. Jill Biden, from Marmee (Little Women) to Shelley and Moira Pfefferman (Transparent), from Mrs. Elizabeth Freake via Florence Owens Thompson (a.k.a. "Migrant Mother") to Melissa Spitz' mom (You Have Nothing to Worry About) we will cover a broad variety of interesting and agenda-setting "real" and "fictional" mothers.

We will ask how concepts of motherhood and mothering have changed over the centuries, analyze how mothers have been (re)presented and what it needs to be(come) an American Mother.

This is part 2 of our investigation into the complex topic home, this time from a specifically transatlantic perspective: Germany vs USA. We will focus on how family and home as well as family as home have been and are conceptualized as well as lived in these two countries.

This class is a compact course, on June 3 and 4, and it also requires student attendance at the conference Family Ecologies (June 16-19) in Bamberg.

We meet for a first who is who and what is what on May 6, 4 pm. Attendance of this first meeting is absolutely mandatory!

Inhalt:

Envisioning itself as nature’s nation, constructions of cultural identity in the U.S. have long been intertwined with shifting conceptions of nature. In this course, we will examine the origins of popular nature narratives, their evolution since colonial times, and their manifestations in the 21st century. How have race, gender, and class informed, complicated, and/ or subverted certain American nature ideals? We will analyze a variety of written and audio-visual texts by canonical and non-canonical writers and filmmakers to explore why the maxim of “wild and free” nature continues to be so alluring in the American imagination.

Inhalt:

This seminar surveys the literature and culture of the Jewish community in America from colonial times to the present. After critically examining the terms Jewish, Jewish literature and Jewish culture, the class provides a historical overview of the major phases of Jewish immigration to America. We will then study landmarks of Jewish-American literature in their respective cultural contexts. A particular focus will be on novels and short stories that deal with characteristic Jewish experiences of the last 120 years. Whether they concentrate on the problems of adapting to new physical, social and cultural surroundings in the wake of immigration, lament the disintegration of familial and religious securities, or reflect upon the horrors of persecution and annihilation, most of these works negotiate the meaning of Jewish identity in modern times. Further social and cultural issues addressed in the seminar include the branches of Judaism in America, Jewish politics and organizations, music and arts, the media and popular culture, anti-Semitism, the Holocaust, and Israel.

Inhalt:

While some instances of the phrase “stay woke” can be found in African-American English throughout the 20th century, the term woke as an adjective with the meaning ‘alert to racial or social discrimination and injustice’ only entered the Oxford English Dictionary in 2017. The 2008 song “Master Teacher” by Erykah Badu, in which the phrase “I stay woke” constitutes the refrain, may have contributed to the popularity of the term, but it was mainly in the course of the Black Lives Matter protests that it gained greater prominence in American culture.
After being used by people on the left for a few years, Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez commented in November of 2021 that “wokeness” was “a term almost exclusively used by older people these days.” Her dismissive remarks provoked Bill Maher to ask the following question about the term woke: “Why, in such a short time, has it gone from a rallying cry to a pejorative?” For Maher, it has to do with the extreme and irrational nature of woke policy proposals as well as an attitude of victimhood and tiresome oversensitivity. This seminar is based on the conviction that the debate on wokeness far transcends semantic niceties. The concept now serves as an important reference point of controversies over the course of American culture, particularly in the fields of race relations, gender and “trans rights”.
After looking at this debate as a late outgrowth of the American culture wars of the 1960, 70s and 80s, the seminar will study landmark contributions of writers that are considered to be at the heart of wokeness, Ibram X. Kendy, Robin DiAngelo, Ta-Nehisi Coates and Judith Butler. A particular focus will be on Nikole Hannah-Jones’s 1619 Project. At least as much attention will be paid to the critics of wokeness, Noah Rothman, Ben Shapiro, Wilfred Reilly, John McWhorter, Christine Rosen, Jordan Peterson, and Bari Weiss among them.
