Inhalt:

A vast number of theories in political science involve the notion of “political preferences” of voters, candidates, parties, legislators, judges, or other actors. A prime example is the spatial model of politics, in which actors have “policy positions” based on which they make decisions. Empirically testing such theories poses major measurement problems: What data and information can we use to infer political preferences? How can we accurately and reliability measure the preferences of political actors from such data? And how can we compare estimated preferences across time and space? This seminar focuses on the measurement of political party preferences. We we will explore some of the key developments in the field, including the use of expert surveys, the coding of party manifestos, the analysis of roll-call data, and the automated text analysis of manifestos and speeches. We will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various methods and what they tell us about modern political competition.

Inhalt:

At least in multi-party systems, politics is usually coalition politics. Thus, it is not surprising that coalition research is one of the most advanced research fields in comparative politics. This seminar provides a research-oriented survey of the current literature on coalitions in advanced parliamentary democracies. The topics covered include coalition formation, the distribution of benefits, coalition governance, intra-coalitional control and coalition termination. We will cover both theoretical and empirical studies with a focus current research articles. After completing the seminar, students will (1) possess a sound knowledge of the current literature on coalition politics, (2) know the most important theoretical and empirical approaches to studying coalition politics along with their strengths and limits, (3) be able to critically and independently assess the state of research regarding specific topics in coalition politics, and (4) be able to identify and systematically answer open research questions regarding coalition politics.

Prerequisites/Zulassungsvoraussetzungen: BA or equivalent qualification in Political Science. A basic understanding of positive political theory is recommended.

Organization: The lecture will be held in a flipped classroom format. I will post videos for each session via the Virtual Campus (VC) once a week. I ask you to watch these videos once a week before our weekly session. Please also read the assigned texts prior to watching the videos as you would for a regular lecture. These texts are available on the VC. We will have on-site session on Tuesdays, 16:00-18:00 to discuss the content of the videos, possible applications and broader implications. The first on-site session will be on April 26, the dates for further sessions will be announced then.

Inhalt:

This lecture first introduces Master students to the most important varieties of institutionalist research in comparative politics including the ‘old’ institutionalism, rational choice institutionalism, historical institutionalism, and sociological institutionalism. Afterwards, we discuss core areas of (mainly) rational choice institutionalist research including the stabilizing effects of institutions on policy-making, institutions as solutions for collective dilemmas, principal−agent models of delegation, agenda-setting, deliberate institutional design, and informal institutions. At the end of the lecture, students will have a profound knowledge of general debates in institutionalist research and are able to relate these debates to specific research topics in comparative politics.

Inhalt:

Während eine Vielzahl von Daten online verfügbar sind, liegen diese häufig entweder in unstrukturierter Form vor oder sind nicht einfach mithilfe eines Downloadbuttons herunterzuladen. Aufgrund dieser Hürden ist es vielen Forschungsinteressierten nicht möglich - oder mit erheblichem Aufwand verbunden diese Art von Daten in ein analysefähiges Format zu bringen. Einen Ausweg bieten hier (automatisierte) Methoden zum Extrahieren und Verarbeiten von Daten das sogenannte Data Scraping. Dieser Kurs soll den Teilnehmenden das Abrufen von webbasierten Daten mithilfe der Programmiersprache R ermöglichen, sodass sie in der Lage sind, die erworbenen Kenntnisse in eigenen Forschungsprojekten einzusetzen.

Inhalt:

In diesem Seminar sollen Studierende die Möglichkeit erhalten, sich nicht nur auf abstrakt-politischer Ebene oder im persönlichen Umfeld mit umweltpolitischen Thema, u.a. Klima & Nachhaltigkeit, zu beschäftigen. Als VerantwortungsträgerInnen von morgen erarbeiten sich die TeilnehmerInnen Einblicke in die konkrete Gestaltung von Umweltpolitik. Denn Umweltpolitik geschieht vor allem in den Kommunen. Aus einem politikwissenschaftlich-methodischen Blickwinkel werden wir uns abseits vom populär geführten Nachhaltigkeitsdiskurs mit den eigentlichen Themen der Umweltpolitik auseinandersetzen. Die Studierenden übernehmen dabei ein für sie interessantes Thema, aus dem sie eine Fragestellung erarbeiten, ein theoretisches Argument heranziehen und mit qualitativen oder quantitativen Methoden eine Analyse durchführen. Zur Analyse werden sie vor allem mit eigens erhobenen Daten arbeiten; z.B. Experteninterviews mit Verantwortlichen aus der Kommunalpolitik und von Kommunalbetrieben. Themen sind u.a.: Abfallwirtschaft (Müll), Abwasserbeseitigung & Abwasserreinigung, Frischwasserversorgung & Wasserhaushalt, Verkehrspolitik & ÖPNV, Flächenpolitik & Flächenverbrauch, (Erd-)Deponien & Altlasten, Grundwasserbelastungen & Gewässerschutz, Recycling & Wiederverwertung, Bauplanungsrecht & erneuerbare Energie, Stadtklimapolitik, Fair Trade vs. regionale Nachhaltigkeit u.v.m.
