Aktuelle Befunde der Migrations- und Integrationsforschung: Explaining attitudes towards immigration and immigrants

Dozent/in:
Anna Berthold
Angaben:
Seminar, 2 SWS
Termine:
Mi, 10:00 - 12:00, FMA/00.06
Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
The seminar will place particular emphasis on empirical research articles; therefore, a profound basic knowledge of quantitative/statistical research methods is essential for attendance. The language of instruction will optionally be English or German in order to facilitate international students’ course attendance. The examination consists of a short presentation (20%), discussion questions (20%) and the submission of a seminar paper (60%). The registration to the seminar and the examination via FlexNow is necessary for the acquisition of a certificate.
Examination is possible for the following modules:
  • Fortgeschrittene Themen der Migration und Integration
  • Aktuelle Befunde der Migrations- und Integrationsforschung
Inhalt:
Social cohesion in European societies is challenged by existing and growing opposition against immigration and immigrants. Growing migration-critical and racist voices along with increasing support and attention for right-wing populist parties throughout Europe as well as still ongoing violent attacks against migrants, refugees and asylum seekers seemingly changed the societal und political climate in Germany and Europe. Even before the rise of Pegida and AfD in Germany, anti-immigrant attitudes have been in the focus of politics, public and science. For decades, researchers in social and related sciences investigated the question of how derogative attitudes towards foreign ethnic groups occur. There are numerous theoretical assumptions and empirical findings, but also many speculations and unresolved questions. Focuses of the seminar are common and current findings of and explanations for anti-immigrant attitudes. Purpose of the seminar is to acquire knowledge of the most important explanatory approaches and their theoretical and empirical substance as well as to compare and to criticize them.

Aktuelle Befunde der Migrations- und Integrationsforschung: Selective migration and integration process

Dozent/in:
Cornelia Kristen
Angaben:
Seminar, 3 SWS
Termine:
Di, 14:00 - 17:00, F21/03.48
Achtung! Beginn erst in der zweiten Vorlesungswoche
ab 22.10.2019
Inhalt:
Selective migration and integration processes

While many explanations have been offered to explain ethnic differences among the second generation, the impact of the pre-migration status of the first generation has generally been neglected. Overlooking immigrant selectivity how immigrants characteristics compare to those remaining in the country of origin limits the current literature s understanding of the observed patterns of assimilation or socioeconomic mobility (Feliciano 2005: 3).
In this seminar, the following topics will be covered:
  • What is selective migration?
  • How do those who came compare to those left behind? Educational selectivity in U.S. immigration
  • When to expect positive and when to expect negative selection
  • Consequences of educational selectivity: Educational attainment of the second generation I
  • Consequences of educational selectivity: Educational attainment of the second generation II
  • Consequences of educational selectivity: Language acquisition in the first generation
  • Measuring selectivity I
  • Measuring selectivity II
  • Health selectivity
  • Motivational selectivity
  • How do those who came compare to those who stayed behind? Educational selectivity in European immigration

Aktuelle Befunde der Migrations- und Integrationsforschung: Why do immigrants have higher educational aspirations?

Dozent/in:
Miriam Schmaus
Angaben:
Seminar, 3 SWS
Termine:
Fr, 15:00 - 18:00, FMA/00.07
Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
6 (or 12) ECTS (or matching qualifications for students of other disciplines). Credit is awarded for one presentation + seminar paper
Credit can be transferred into the following modules:
  • Ethnische Ungleichheit
  • Aktuelle Befunde der Migrations- und Integrationsforschung
  • Fortgeschrittene Themen der Migrationssoziologie

NOTE: The language of instruction will optionally be English or German, in order to facilitate international students to attend the course. However, a (small) number of relevant studies are solely available in German. German language knowledge may thus be of advantage.

ATTENTION: Class starts on 25.10.2019 (one week after the official start of the semester).
Inhalt:
Educational achievement is shaping the life course of individuals in modern societies. For many immigrant groups, educational achievement tends to be lower than that of the majority population. Yet in contrast to their oftentimes lower educational achievement, educational aspirations of immigrants often exceed those of their majority counterparts. This seminar aims to shed light on the factors that are behind immigrants’ high educational aspirations. In the first part of the class, we will therefore talk about the ‘theoretical basics’, meaning we will cover what educational aspirations actually are, how they are generated and why these processes may differ for immigrants. In the second part of the class we will then discuss the ‘empirical reality’, meaning studies that assess the main arguments behind immigrants’ educational aspirations in different empirical specifications and critically assess their research design as well as their main implications.
