To study modules in the MA English and American Studies as a student from other Master programmes, you need to have a miminum score of 60 of 100 points in the English Placement Test (see § 38 der StuFPO). The test is offered every semester and can be retaken any number of times. Basic knowledge in the core subjects of English and American Studies is highly recommended.

- Inhalt
- This seminar does not focus on the historical events of the American Revolution itself, but on how those events have been remembered and reinterpreted over time. The year 1776 is widely seen as the founding moment of the United States, yet its meaning has never been settled. In the run-up to the 250-year anniversary in 2026, the course examines how Americans have repeatedly returned to the Revolution in order to celebrate, reinterpret, and contest its legacy.
Focusing on key commemorations, among them the 50-year Jubilee, the Centennial and the Bicentennial, the course explores how the Revolution has been publicly staged and reshaped. It considers competing interpretations of 1776, including conservative and progressive readings, religious and secular frameworks, and differing emphases on liberty and equality, as well as tensions between dominant narratives and African American perspectives. Attention will also be given to the prominence of the Founding Fathers and the distinct roles attributed to the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.
Drawing on a range of sources, including political speeches, popular histories, historic sites, public celebrations, and debates in legal theory, the seminar approaches the American Revolution as an ongoing field of interpretation whose significance remains contested, not least in the context of the Semiquincentennial.
