The test is offered every semester and can be retaken any number of times. Basic knowledge in the core subjects of English and American Studies is highly recommended.

- Sixty years ago, in March 1965, some of the most iconic images in American history were captured: Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel and Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. marching side by side from Selma to Montgomery. This moment has come to epitomize the Black-Jewish alliance, a powerful symbol of solidarity during the Civil Rights Movement. But how deep did this alliance run, and how enduring was it? This seminar explores the historical, cultural, and political dimensions of Black-Jewish relations in the United States. While we will examine the narrative that 1965 represented the peak of Black-Jewish cooperation, we will also critically assess the notion of a “golden age” of solidarity. Was the relationship truly built on a shared sense of intertwined destinies, or was this perception misguided?
We will begin by investigating the parallels often drawn between Black and Jewish experiences, such as the identification of Black struggles with the biblical story of Exodus, before turning to the pivotal moments of cooperation in the Civil Rights era. We will also address key points of fracture in the relationship, including the impact of the 1967 Six-Day War, conflicts over affirmative action, school integration, and urban policy – exemplified by New York City’s 1968 teachers’ strike – as well as the Crown Heights riots of 1991. The seminar will not shy away from contentious aspects of the relationship, including the role of Black antisemitism, from the rhetoric of the Nation of Islam, as represented by figures like Malcolm X, Louis Farrakhan, and Khalid Abdul Muhammad, to debates surrounding contemporary movements like Black Lives Matter.
Beyond history and politics, we will explore Black-Jewish interactions in literature, film, and comedy. Readings include excerpts from Bernard Malamud’s The Tenants, Philip Roth’s The Human Stain, and from James McBride’s memoir The Color of Water, alongside Barry Levinson’s movie Liberty Heights and the documentary Blacks and Jews by Deborah Kaufman and Alan Snitow. The course will also investigate how Black-Jewish dynamics have been reflected in comedy, including the work of Dave Chappelle and Sarah Silverman.
In addition to these cultural representations, we will engage with landmark essays that have shaped reflections on Black-Jewish relations, such as those by James Baldwin, Norman Podhoretz, and Julius Lester. Another crucial topic of discussion will be the history and beliefs of the Black Hebrew Israelites and the experiences of Black Jews in America, including notable converts like Sammy Davis Jr.
By examining the history of Black-Jewish relations, the seminar will provide theoretical insights into the complexities of race in America.
