- Inhalt
- In this block seminar, we will survey the cultural and literary movement of American Modernism that flourished in the United States during the first half of the 20th century. By exploring the works of notable US-American writers such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Nella Larsen, T.S. Eliot, Zora Neale Hurston, Ralph Ellison, William Faulkner, Ezra Pound, Djuna Barnes, and others, we will engage critically with significant cultural and literary texts from this period across various genres. In our readings, we will examine the thematic, stylistic, and aesthetic modernist engagements and experimentations of the selected primary texts against the backdrop of the two World Wars and resulting societal changes. Key topics of discussion will include crucial critical concepts and frameworks such as cultural identity, class, race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and the nonhuman environment. To aid our in-class discussions and analyses of the texts, we will draw on secondary theoretical and scholarly works while also practicing essential academic skills.
The course will feature in-depth studies of four American novels, complemented by shorter works (poems, short stories, dramas), excerpts, and scholarly texts. Additionally, we will have the opportunity to engage with ETA Hoffmann Theater in Bamberg in connection to their upcoming stage production of The Great Gatsby!
Note: This class can be taken as a seminar (Proseminar) or a reading exercise (Übung), designed to assist you in working through the American Studies reading list. Therefore, participants are expected to read a lot. All materials (except the novels) will be provided well ahead of class via the Virtual Campus, giving you enough time to prepare. It is important for participants to do the assigned readings, attend class regularly and contribute to class discussions.
