Inhalt
course description
With populist, politicised uses of terms like ‘gender(ed) language’, ‘identity politics’ or ‘cancel culture’, feminism, gender and queer studies are once again back in the public eye. In this class, we will look at this complex field and its diverse branches and ‘isms’ from a historicising perspective informed by cultural studies. The class will provide a historical overview of the origins of (Western) feminism (e.g. in Mary Wollstonecraft’s Vindication of the Rights of Woman, 1792), the different ‘waves’ of the feminist movement (e.g. second-wave feminism and the ways in which it has been criticised as ‘white’ feminism), and the formation of gender and queer studies in the UK (and the US). We will then take into account Black feminism, postcolonial feminism, masculinity studies, ecofeminism, and other current discussions such as intersectionality or the trans* debate. In each session we will analyse formative texts and their cultural and ideological contexts. We will make use of two novels – Virginia Woolf’s Orlando (1928) and Bernardine Evaristo’s Girl, Woman, Other (2019) – as case studies for the literary analysis of the theories introduced throughout this class. Note: The chair of English Literature will host the annual conference of the German Society for the Studies of British Cultures later this year (“Re-Orientating Gender (Studies): Feminism, Queerness, Trans* in Cultural Studies Today”, November 20-22). Students attending this class are very welcome to attend the keynote lectures and other parts of the conference.

course requirements:
  • preparation of texts & active participation
  • short presentation & preparation of group tasks/discussion questions
  • Students who want to write a term paper will be asked to present and discuss their research question in the last session.
  • While attendance is not mandatory, the allocated workload for a seminar is quite substantial (see module handbook). Please keep in mind that classroom discussions are part of the learning process – seminars depend on all of us doing the work together. To make sure that each of you is on track with reading and topics discussed in class I will therefore ask those of you who miss a substantial amount of classes (i.e. more than 3 sessions) to hand in some form of documentation for missed sessions (extended reading responses, excerpts of secondary texts, discussion of study questions).
