To study modules in the MA English and American Studies as a student from other Master programmes, you need to have a miminum score of 60 of 100 points in the English Placement Test (see § 38 der StuFPO). The test is offered every semester and can be retaken any number of times. Basic knowledge in the core subjects of English and American Studies is highly recommended.

- Inhalt
- The period from the 1790s to the early 1830s, known in British literary and art history as the Romantic era, was not only a pivotal phase in literary and cultural development but also a time of significant technological, economic, social, and political transformation. Beyond the Industrial Revolution, the overthrow of the political system across the Channel sparked intense debates in Britain about constitutional institutions, the legal system, social hierarchy, the role of women, and the religious establishment.
This debate, often called the French Revolution Debate, led to the formation of ideological camps—commonly referred to as Jacobins and anti-Jacobins or radicals and conservatives. The emerging literary and artistic movement engaged with these developments in varied ways: some works responded directly to contemporary social and political realities, while others sought refuge in the imagination and the sublime.
To deepen an understanding of the historical, literary, and cultural currents of the time, this Übung examines a range of key texts, from political pamphlets and religious tracts to poetry and the novel.
