Inhalt
The course focuses on three post-idealistic aesthetic theories of the 19th and 20th centuries, from Austria, Italy, and Poland, which deal both with the concept of the beautiful and the subdivision of the arts. The three theories are deeply linked with the general philosophical background of the authors, so we will try to connect their major aesthetic ideas to their metaphysical and epistemological foundations, such as historicism in Croce's or Husserl's phenomenology in Ingarden's case. We will also discuss the historical evolution of the arts in this time, such as the rise of film as a new art, whose treatment by Ingarden remains probably the best text on the ontology of film ever written. The seminar will be taught in English.
If you're interested, please reach out to Louisa Hagedorn at louisa.hagedorn@uni-bamberg.de. Spots are limited!
The works, which you will need to acquire on your own and which should be read in advance of the seminar (or during the seminar itself but in advance of the discussions of the respective works), include Bernard Bolzano, “On the Concept of the Beautiful” and “On the Classification of the Fine Arts,” both available in his Essays on Beauty and the Arts; Benedetto Croce, Aesthetic: As Science of Expression and General Linguistic; and Roman Ingarden, Ontology of the Work of Art.
