- Inhalt
- This course introduces students to the study of endangered languages by combining theoretical insights with practical research skills. We begin by asking what constitutes language endangerment and how language vitality is assessed. A special focus is placed on societal dynamics, international frameworks, and governmental policies, illustrated through real-life examples from around the world.
On the practical side, students engage with methods for researching endangered languages, including empirical approaches and ethical considerations when working with indigenous and/or marginalized communities. A key element of this course is fieldwork methodology: how to prepare, conduct, and reflect on linguistic fieldwork. We also explore the basics of corpus building: from data collection and annotation to digital tools used in documentation and analysis. Through case studies and hands-on tasks, students gain insight into the challenges and responsibilities of working with endangered linguistic communities.
