Inhalt
Diese Lehrveranstaltung kann von Studierenden der Romanistik, Anglistik und Germanistik gleichermaßen besucht werden. Sie führt ein in das derzeit dominierende Forschungsparadigma der Linguistik und ist daher fächerübergreifend relevant. Die Anrechenbarkeit (Modul, ECTS etc.) ist von meiner Seite her flexibel und hängt vor allem an den Vorgaben der einzelnen Fächer.

Everyone is currently talking about AI and ‘thinking’ or even ‘conscious’ machines. Topics related to philosophical theories on the philosophy of mind are therefore highly topical at the moment. At the same time, linguistics as a discipline has now reached a point where human language is no longer treated as an abstract play of signs in a vacuum, but (following the so-called ‘cognitive revolution’) as the product of very concrete human brains: as cognitive linguistics.

Cognitive linguistics is not a uniform formal theory, but rather a modern and alternative view of the same phenomena that structuralist linguistics has already sought to explain. While structuralist linguistics sought to describe language as a self-contained system, quasi as communication games in a vacuum, cognitive linguistics attempts to consistently use advances in cognitive psychology to describe and explain linguistic phenomena, thus taking into account the fact that language is used by humans.

In terms of its subject matter, the course is largely a repetition of the general introduction to linguistics, but from a completely new perspective. Among other things, it will examine how we categorise our environment and how speech and thought relate to each other. The lecture is based on Pörings / Schmitz (2003), an introductory work published almost simultaneously in various languages by a team of authors in international cooperation, with examples adapted to each language. In addition to the lecture, an in-depth reading exercise is offered.
