Processes of globalization have not only led to the intensification of social relations across national borders, but they also have distributive consequences and created “winners” and “losers”. There is evidence that particularly the upper social classes have profited from globalization and the increasing porousness of national borders. They have increasing opportunities to “exit” their nation state to profit from resources and positions beyond the nation state, for example by increasing their international mobility, and by studying and working abroad. Some argue that globalization has even led to a restructuring of social classes and the emergence of a transnational social class. In this seminar, we will discuss theoretical approaches for the analysis of social inequalities beyond the nation state, as well as empirical studies on topics such as unequal international mobility, the rise of the “global superrich” and the emergence of transnational elites.

Participation

(1) Regular attendance is necessary to be able to engage in a fruitful debate with each other, as the session contents build on each other. Please let me know via email before the session if you cannot attend.

(2) Reading: The readings marked as “basic” are compulsory readings for everyone. They form the basis for our discussions during the sessions. The “presentation” readings are not compulsory, but they are nevertheless recommended for everyone.

(3) Presentation: You are required to give a presentation in one session of your choice. The presentation should be based on the presentation readings and last around 20 minutes. Your task is to synthesize the main argument and findings of the texts, and not to “retell” them. You should end your presentation with further questions for discussion and also moderate the discussion.

It is required that you discuss your presentation with me at least one week in advance. I can only give adequate feedback if you come to this discussion prepared. This means that you should have read both the basic as well as the presentation readings – in order to know how they fit together – and you should have prepared a detailed outline of your presentation.
