- Inhalt
- The seminar deals with the social prerequisites and consequences of the increasing spread of technical applications that use artificial intelligence (AI). These applications are increasingly shaping our everyday lives and are considered by many political and economic actors to be the key to future growth and prosperity. However, the, sometimes rapid, technical developments in this area are also giving rise to fears and concerns about a future that may be completely alien to us.
The aim of the seminar is to shed sociological light on this tension between hopes and fears in connection with AI. The first part will clarify what AI is (and what it is not). To this end, buzzwords that are often used in connection with AI will be examined from a sociological point of view, such as the role of training data and the black box character of AI. In the second part, controversial uses of AI, e.g., in the areas of personal assistance, security and policing, or political campaigns, will be analyzed and discussed in more detail. The third part will ask to what extent the spread of AI represents a transformation of fundamental social significance and which social actors are involved in shaping it.
