- Inhalt
- This seminar explores the diverse attitudes toward the Qur'an in South Asian Islam in general and Quranic interpretation in this region in particular. The period examined ranges from the late Middle Ages to the modern era, the geographical area covering India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. We proceed chronologically, embedding Qur'anrelated developments in the general history of Islam and Islamic movements in South Asia. In addition to Qur'anic commentaries, we will also deal with Qur'anic translations relevant to South Asia in various languages. Particular attention will be paid to the extent to which interpretive communities related to the Qur'an existed and still exist in South Asia. The seminar will be accompanied by a reading course in which exegetical texts in Arabic and other languages from South Asia will be read.
